Hey everyone welcome back to Silver Screen Spectacle and the latest edition of Flashback: MCU Edition. We’re finishing Phase One today with the 2012 Avengers. This was the film that launched the Marvel universe into what it is today. While the previous films were hits, none were a phenomenon. Opening with a $200.3 million dollar opening weekend, it easily became the biggest weekend at the Domestic box office ever. The film eventually ended its run with a stunning $1.519 billion dollars. While this was a critical and audience hit, there was some backlash against the film saying it got very overrated. So now all these years later let’s look back and see how Marvel’s first team-up film and one of the most ambitious comic book films holds up.
So this movie is still incredible and I’m sick of the random backlash against it. While there are some flaws I didn’t see in 2012, this is still one of the best MCU movies. The excitement in the theater back then was insane. This was an event in every sense of the word. But I do acknowledge there are a few issues. The first act is the weakest part of the film and feels a bit too jumbled in the editing. Hawkeye gets shafted yet again after his minimal introduction in Thor he is under Loki’s control for the first 2/3rds. In terms of plot, it’s pretty minimal and I can see how that would bother people. Finally, the film has a look of a really expensive TV show. The movie still looks great, but something about the cinematography just feels off.
All those flaws out the way I adore this movie still. All the actors are pitch-perfect casting still. Mark Ruffalo is a much better Banner/Hulk than Edward Norton. Tom Hiddleston was the first great villain of the MCU and he continues that here. Scarlett Johansson gets more to work with than she did in Iron Man 2. Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans’s dynamic was everything I hoped it would be. The appeal in this movie for me is getting to watch these characters interact and fight together. I could watch all of them just talk to each other for hours. They fill the script with so many great character moments and humor. The directing in the action sequences is great and easy to follow. Visual effects still look great, even by today’s standards.
The entire third act is a masterpiece, I’ve seen this movie countless times and I still get chills and am smiling like an idiot constantly. The group shot of all the Avengers fighting together is still one of the best moments in Marvel. Despite its flaws, I can watch this movie over and over without tiring of it. All the moments that made the cinema crowd go nuts in 2012 still get me now, especially Hulk smashing Loki. That might still be the top five funniest moments in these films.
As for the credits sequence, this was the first time we got two, the first one being the introduction of Thanos as the one behind Loki. At the time I knew little about his character, but it was still a cool sequence. I never could’ve imagined what that was building to. The second scene shows all the Avengers sitting silently eating Schwarma after the Battle of New York. It’s a funny scene to end the film on.
So overall, despite seeing some of its flaws now, I still adore The Avengers. While bigger and some better things came down the line later, the first team-up movie is just as fun as it was in 2012. So, guys, that’s the end of Phase One. I’ll be back later this week to start Phase Two with 2013’s Iron Man 3 and Thor The Dark World, also known as the dark age of MCU movies. Let me know your thoughts on the movie in the comments below and if you liked the article, maybe share it. See you guys tomorrow with a new Wait! How Did I Miss This?
